Wolf Island Range Hoods at Plesser's Appliances

Wolf island hoods, available at Plesser's Appliances, mount from the ceiling above a cooktop or rangetop in an island, finished on all sides because every side is visible. Built by Sub-Zero Group in Wisconsin, island hoods deliver full overhead capture for an island cooking surface — the performance a downdraft cannot match.

Full Overhead Capture Above an Island
Heat, steam, and grease rise, and an overhead hood catches them where they naturally go. That makes an island hood substantially more effective than a downdraft on the same cooking surface, particularly with tall stockpots and on outer burners. If ventilation performance matters and the ceiling can carry a hood, this is the configuration to specify.

Finished on Every Side
Unlike a wall hood with a hidden back, an island hood is a freestanding object in the middle of the room, visible from all directions and at eye level from the adjoining space. Construction and finish are executed accordingly. In an open-plan room it becomes a significant design element — worth coordinating with lighting, cabinetry, and any exposed metal in the space.

Sizing Capacity and Capture Width
Island hoods generally need more capacity and more capture width than a wall hood over the same range, because there is no wall to help contain rising air and cross-drafts from an open room work against capture. Ask about recommended capacity for your specific cooking surface and about extending capture beyond the cooktop footprint.

Blower Placement and Noise
Because an island hood sits in the middle of a living space rather than against a kitchen wall, blower noise carries further. An in-line or exterior-mounted blower moves the noise out of the room and is worth specifying on any high-capacity island installation. Blowers are frequently ordered separately — confirm what is included on your order.

Structural, Duct, and Code Planning
Island hoods require ceiling structure capable of carrying the weight, a duct path through the ceiling and out, a dedicated circuit, mounting height set to the cooking surface, and in high-capacity installations a make-up air system under mechanical code. All of this has to be framed before the ceiling closes. Talk to the team at Plesser's Appliances and your builder about hood selection while the island is still on paper.
