Cooktop vs. Rangetop
A cooktop drops into a countertop cutout and sits shallow, preserving usable drawer or cabinet space below. A rangetop is a deeper, taller unit with professional control depth and typically higher output, installed above a cabinet run rather than into a counter. This determines the cabinetry design — settle it before millwork.


Gas Configurations
Gas cooktops and rangetops use dual-tier burner designs delivering high output for searing alongside dedicated melt and simmer settings at the low end. Heavy continuous cast-iron grates let cookware slide across the surface rather than lifting between burners. Confirm burner count, output, and grate design for your width.


Induction and Electric Options
Induction responds faster than gas, holds low settings without cycling, and wipes clean as a flat surface — but requires magnetic cookware and substantial dedicated 240V service. Electric radiant offers a flat surface at lower electrical demand and works with any cookware. Confirm element layout and any power-sharing between zones.


Freeing the Oven Placement
Separating the cooking surface from the oven lets the oven go into a wall or cabinet at chest height, so a loaded roasting pan comes out without bending over a hot door at knee level. It also opens up island and peninsula layouts a freestanding range cannot support.


Cutout, Clearance, and Ventilation Planning
Cutout dimensions, countertop overhang, clearance to combustibles, and cabinet requirements below differ between cooktops and rangetops and between widths. Ventilation should be sized to surface output rather than chosen afterward.
