Opening downward eliminates the reach-over-your-head problem of an over-range microwave, which is both a safety issue with hot liquids and an accessibility one. Frees the Wall Above the Range
An over-range microwave occupies exactly the space where proper ventilation belongs, and a microwave-hood combination compromises at both jobs. Moving the microwave into a base cabinet lets a correctly sized ZLINE hood go above the cooking surface. On a high-output range, that single decision improves both functions substantially.
